Dear Fellow Agoraphobia Sufferer,

Agoraphobia nearly stole everything that mattered to me. I still shiver when I think about it. There was a day when I couldn’t leave my house without severe panic symptoms. Just walking to the mailbox – my legs would shake and I would struggle hard to breathe.

At its worst, agoraphobia confined me to lying in bed most of the day - monitoring my heartbeat and breathing, scanning my body for strange symptoms. I worried constantly that a vital organ might give out, or that I might die.

At times I was afraid to go into other rooms in the house – especially to eat dinner with my family. The lights over the kitchen table seemed bright and overwhelming. My hands were too shaky to hold onto a fork or spoon. There were times when I couldn’t slow down my breathing enough to swallow – and feared I might choke.

If you have agoraphobia, you know what I’m talking about. This stuff sounds crazy to most people. The symptoms of agoraphobia are something you must experience to understand:

  • I would feel fine one minute, then suddenly feel my chest get tight, my heart speed up, feel dizzy and faint, and feel like I was gasping for air.
  • I lost touch with friends and couldn’t talk on the phone.
  • If I ventured out of the house, I was deathly afraid of things that don’t bother most people, and even more afraid of what others might think if they knew the fear I felt inside.
  • I worried every day that I might be dying or losing my mind.
  • At times I felt like no one, not even the people closest to me could understand what I was going through – and desperately needed someone to talk to.
  • I tried doctors, therapy, support groups, prescription medications, and all the other methods of recovery – and felt like nothing would ever work.
  • I watched valuable years of my life pass by, feeling trapped, hopeless, and stuck all alone in a world of fear. I thought all my talents and abilities would go wasted.
  • I thought I would never be able to finish school, get a career, fall in love, or follow my dreams. I feared I might live in my parents’ house for the rest of my life.

Getting the right help for agoraphobia was not easy.

I remember being examined by doctors who said nothing was wrong with me – but lacked the training to diagnose agoraphobia.

I went to psychologists who asked lots of questions about a past I couldn’t change and charged me $100 an hour.

I tried medication for a while, but was afraid of getting hopelessly addicted to drugs. Plus, the pills made me sleepy and unable to function.

I think a support group might have helped me, who knows? – but I couldn’t figure out how to get downtown where the meetings were. Not without taking valium, closing my eyes, and lying on a van floor while my dad drove. Once there – I just couldn’t sit among other people without panicking.

Finally, a mentor did help me – a woman who had recovered from agoraphobia. But I only got to meet with her once a week at most. I felt like I needed help 24/7.

The smartest thing I did was become an expert on self-help techniques…and take recovery into my own hands. I finally quit looking for something or someone else to fix me and took responsibility for my own recovery. The day I made that decision was the day I began my real recovery from agoraphobia.

Today I lead a life free of panic and fear!

I have done things, and continue to do things I thought I’d never be able to do, like:

  • For starters, I moved out of my parents’ house.
  • I finished college and earned a masters degree.
  • I started and operate a successful business.
  • I enjoy speaking to groups of any size.

  • I can travel anywhere I want, by driving a car, riding a bus or train, or even flying in an airplane.
  • I am able to attend large events in crowded auditoriums. I’ve seen productions at the Kennedy Theater in Washington D.C. and shows at the major hotels in Las Vegas.
  • I am able to walk on the beach, or alone through the woods.
  • I can shop in crowded malls, stand in line at stores, and…

Recover From Agoraphobia?”

I realized it was up to me to get my own life back. If I was going to recover from agoraphobia, I needed to take things into my own hands – not wait for someone else to do something for me.

So I started reading self-help books to learn everything I could – and put together a plan for my recovery.

Progress wasn’t all forward.

I tested what worked and what didn’t work.

I learned mostly by trial and error – and here’s what worked:

 

My Recovery From Agoraphobia
In A Nutshell

I started by learning to get relaxed. I practiced physical relaxation skills on a daily basis until I could relax myself immediately and on command. I know that panic and phobias have a deeper cause – but most of the time I was hyperventilating so badly I could hardly think. I couldn’t work on the deeper stuff when I couldn’t stop shaking or even catch my breath.

Then I worked on both sides of the brain.

  • I practiced visualization to replace negative emotional memories stored as pictures in right brain.
  • I changed fear-producing thought patterns (on the left side of the brain).

Finally, I faced my fears gradually, step-by-step. I followed a scientifically proven process that psychologists call “systematic desensitization” (or gradual exposure), which is considered to be the #1 treatment for phobias today.

Those are the basic self-help techniques that worked, and the core of what I teach others. But that’s not all I did…

 

“...Two Major Discoveries Changed My Life”

Looking back, I’d say that two discoveries were major turning points on my road to recovery:

I Discovered the “Positive Side of Panic.”

What most books say about panic and phobia sufferers used to really get me down. Most described us as defective personalities – overly emotional, overly excitable, highly controlling, obsessive – and a host of other character flaws.

With such a negative view of myself, I felt trying to correct my defects was futile, and put all of my effort into merely avoiding panic. Had I held to this view of my personality, I’d still be suffering from panic attacks and agoraphobia today.

Fortunately, I changed my thinking, and in doing so, changed my life. I stopped the panic when I started understanding my personality gifts and applying them toward positive goals.

Many famous and talented people suffer from panic attacks, and yes, even agoraphobia!

Charles Darwin (famous scientist), Charles Schultz (creator of “Peanuts” cartoon), Earl Campbell (football hall-of-famer), and Kim Basinger (oscar-award winning actress) are great examples of high-achieving people plagued by panic attacks or periods of agoraphobia.

I learned that many of the “character flaws” behind panic have a positive side:

  • Anxiety is really just a form of energy.
  • An imagination extraordinary enough to picture panic-producing images can create new ideas and imagine success.
  • A strong drive for control can be an asset when focused on self-control.
  • What some call perfectionism might also be seen as the driving motivation to achieve high ideals.
  • A mind able to analyze and come up with so many negative possibilities to worry about can also create positive solutions.

I decided that recovering from agoraphobia was not about changing who I was or correcting a dysfunctional personality. Instead, it was about learning how powerful my personality characteristics really are, and how to use that power to create positive results in my life.

My other big breakthrough came when...

I Found a Purpose Bigger Than Fear

When I first planned my recovery, my ultimate goal was to avoid panic attacks. This was the wrong goal. It did not motivate me to do the hard work of facing my fears. I could most easily avoid panic attacks by staying in the house and playing it safe – which reinforced the phobia.

It took much courage to face my fears – and I needed a reason for having courage.

I achieved true freedom from agoraphobia and in my life when I found a strong reason for it – a purpose in life that made fear irrelevant.

I developed a burning desire to do something that moved my focus away from the inward world of controlling panic symptoms to doing something to make a difference in the world around me.

Developing a sense of purpose had a powerful effect on my recovery from agoraphobia.

My Background in Psychology

After I recovered from agoraphobia, I devoted myself to the study of psychology, focusing on panic and phobias:

  • I did my undergraduate study in psychology at University of California at Davis and focused my research on agoraphobia (of course).
  • I earned a masters degree in psychology at California State University, Chico and did even more research on the topic of anxiety.
  • While in graduate school, I read all the research I could on the treatment of phobias.
  • I published original research and presented at two major conferences of the American Psychological Association.
  • Besides my formal education, I’ve spent thousands of hours (literally) reading every self-help book for anxiety, panic or agoraphobia I could find.
  • Today, I lead a support group, I call “Goodbye Anxiety,” for people suffering from anxiety disorders.
