Agoraphobia nearly stole everything that mattered to me. I still shiver when I think about it. There was a day when I couldn’t leave my house without severe panic symptoms. Just walking to the mailbox – my legs would shake and I would struggle hard to breathe.

My hands were too shaky to hold onto a fork or spoon. There were times when I couldn’t slow down my breathing enough to swallow – and feared I might choke.

Getting the right help for agoraphobia was not easy.
I remember being examined by doctors who said nothing was wrong with me – but lacked the training to diagnose agoraphobia.
I went to psychologists who asked lots of questions about a past I couldn’t change and charged me $100 an hour.
I tried medication for a while, but was afraid of getting hopelessly addicted to drugs. Plus, the pills made me sleepy and unable to function.
I think a support group might have helped me, who knows? – but I couldn’t figure out how to get downtown where the meetings were. Not without taking valium, closing my eyes, and lying on a van floor while my dad drove. Once there – I just couldn’t sit among other people without panicking.
Finally, a mentor did help me – a woman who had recovered from agoraphobia. But I only got to meet with her once a week at most. I felt like I needed help 24/7.

I realized it was up to me to get my own life back. If I was going to recover from agoraphobia, I needed to take things into my own hands – not wait for someone else to do something for me.

I learned mostly by trial and error – and here’s what worked:
I started by learning to get relaxed. I practiced physical relaxation skills on a daily basis until I could relax myself immediately and on command. I know that panic and phobias have a deeper cause – but most of the time I was hyperventilating so badly I could hardly think. I couldn’t work on the deeper stuff when I couldn’t stop shaking or even catch my breath.
Then I worked on both sides of the brain.
Finally, I faced my fears gradually, step-by-step. I followed a scientifically proven process that psychologists call “systematic desensitization” (or gradual exposure), which is considered to be the #1 treatment for phobias today.

Looking back, I’d say that two discoveries were major turning points on my road to recovery:

What most books say about panic and phobia sufferers used to really get me down. Most described us as defective personalities – overly emotional, overly excitable, highly controlling, obsessive – and a host of other character flaws.
With such a negative view of myself, I felt trying to correct my defects was futile, and put all of my effort into merely avoiding panic. Had I held to this view of my personality, I’d still be suffering from panic attacks and agoraphobia today.
Fortunately, I changed my thinking, and in doing so, changed my life. I stopped the panic when I started understanding my personality gifts and applying them toward positive goals.

Charles Darwin (famous scientist), Charles Schultz (creator of “Peanuts” cartoon), Earl Campbell (football hall-of-famer), and Kim Basinger (oscar-award winning actress) are great examples of high-achieving people plagued by panic attacks or periods of agoraphobia.
